Essay on Financial Dependence A Problem For American...
Voltaire once said, ââ¬Å"It is not inequality which is the real misfortune, it is dependence.â⬠This rings true for Americans, who have a tendency to rely on others in search of solutions to our own problems. As a whole, we insist on sharing the burden, such as borrowing foreign money from countries like China to lessen our growing deficit. American businesses are similarly dependent on foreign relations, fueled by cheap labor for a greater profit on goods. On a societal level, Americans are dependent on our government for welfare and financial assistance whenever the economy crashes. Yet, the economyââ¬â¢s well-being is a direct result of the condition of American businesses, and federal programs like welfare are closely linked to our nationalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This ripple effect resulted in a reduction in production and in turn, a reduction in the workforce. The majority of the population, which was now unemployed, could not make new purchases with the little money they had, so inventory accumulated and deflation occurred. As a response to these economic woes, the American government acted quickly to provide federal assistance. Prohibition ended with ratification of the 21st Amendment, which meant alcohol could boost the American economy. The Tennessee Valley Authority Act resulted in dams that generated inexpensive hydroelectric power via the Tennessee River. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was created to provide jobs for unemployed people without competing with private industry, focusing on constructing public buildings such as post offices, bridges, schools, etc. Most importantly, FDR signed the Social Security Act of 1935, which was an insurance that guaranteed pensions to Americans and care for those who need it most. Americans depended solely on these welfare programs to get their families back on their feet. These programs fueled the hope that there would be relief for the unemployed and poor, recovery of the American econ omy, and reform of the financial system to prevent future recessions. Welfare now refers to programs under the Social Security Act, and Americans still wholly rely on the government for aid during financial crises, such as during theShow MoreRelatedCompetitive Analysis: Buy.Com Amazon and Overstar839 Words à |à 4 Pagesintelligence need to come to terms with what business and competitive analysis is and also how it works. Importance Of Literary Devices Of Things Fall Apart By...
The importance of literary devices in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Good afternoon Mr Wilson and fellow classmates. Today I will be discussing the utilisation of various literary devices to globalise themes within Things Fall Apart. Achebe employs various themes within Things Fall Apart to describe Okonkwo flaws and his struggle in Umofia however, how does Achebe link these themes universally? Ostensibly, the novel seems to target a very specific audience: researchers who have studied Nigerian culture, traditions and history. On the other hand, scrutinising the novel asserts the book to be a salient record of various universal themes, human experiences and numerous struggles that are relevant and relatable to a contemporary audience, regardless of whether or not they are acquainted with Nigerian culture. Achebeââ¬â¢s writing style created a novel with rich literary techniques that are employed to a succinct manner. Things Fall Apart affirms to be greater than the product of its literary devices and techniques. Achebe successfully employs syntax, different types of imagery, diction, figurative language, repetition, and symbols to both enhance the novel and its themes. I believe the novelââ¬â¢s success lie in the intriguing themes which are maintain throughout time and link to the modern world. Fears and Concerns about Public Speaking Fears and Concerns about Public Speaking There are many things in this world that one can have a fear of. One could be scared of bugs, the dark, or heights; but a major fear is the fear of having to speak in public. In everyday life public speaking is necessary, whether it be in a social or professional setting. We will write a custom essay sample on Public Speaking, Fears and Concerns. or any similar topic only for you Order Now My biggest fears and concerns about public speaking are being the center of attention, rejection, and failure. Being the center of attention can be very nerve racking. Are they judging the way I am dressed or the way I present myself? Are they paying attention to what I have to say? Or even, what will they think of me when I am done my presentation? Lastly, can I stop my nervous habits long enough to finish my presentation? These are all questions that run through my head that could easily distract me from actually presenting in the way I would like too. At some point everyone has to be concerned about rejection. This is also one of my main fears and concerns. The fact that not everyone will agree with, or accept, the point I am trying to portray. Maybe they just will not care or give me the time of day, and maybe even try to conflict with what I have to say. Then it will feel like I have wasted my time to come up with a presentation just to be ridiculed. No one ever thinks to themselves that they want to be a failure. My fears could distract me from delivering my presentation in the way I would like. I could stutter, forget what to say, or just not be as well prepared as I thought. This would all lead to a miserable presentation failure. Would I ever gain respect of my audience again? I do not want to be thought of as a failure. That is probably my worst concern about public speaking. With all kinds of fears and concerns about public speaking, it is difficult to think that one could get over them to go on to become a great public speaker. Mordecai Richler`s Solomon Gursky Was Here Essays -
Mordecai Richler`s Solomon Gursky Was Here Solomon Gursky Was Here is an epic novel spanning nearly a century and a half, from the mid 1800's to 1980's. It is the story of the obsession of Moses Berger, a Rhodes scholar turned alcoholic, with Solomon Gursky, the charismatic son of a poor immigrant. Solomon, with his brother Bernard and Morrie, built the massive liquor empire of McTavish industries. Moses is attempting to write a biography of Solomon, which becomes his life's work. Through his investigations the complex story of five generations of Gurskys is revealed. The eldest is Ephraim, Solomon'scriminal, perpetually scheming grandfather. Ephraim, is constantly associated with the raven, he escaped imprisonment in England in the mid 1800's by forging documents, also allowing him to join a crew searching for the Northwest passage, called the Franklin Epedition. The expedition turned into a total disaster, Ephraim, the sole survivor. The youngest Gursky appearing in this story is Isaac, Solomon's grandson. This complex tale unravels, as Moses recalls, all of the events in his life which pertain to it. Ever present in this Canadian cultural satire is the theme of filial relationships and the exploration of Solomon and his re-incarnation as Sir Hyman Kaplansky, in conjunction with his family and their exploits. Every character in this novel is in some way corrupt or failure. Moses is an alcoholic who did not live up to his potential; Bernard is a greedy self-centered bastard; Solomon is a cheat, when it comes to gambling, women and anything else you can think of. Richler, through this exaggeration of corruption and failure, is satirizing the idea that Canada is a second rate nation. One character, in conversation with Moses, once said: "Canada is not so much a country as a holding tank filled with the disgruntled progeny of defeated peoples. The French-Canadians consumed by self-pity; the descendants of Scots who fled the Duke of Chamberlain; Irish the famine; and Jews the black hundreds. Then there are the peasants from the Ukraine, Poland , Italy and Greece, convenient to grow wheat and dig out ore and swing the hammers and run the restaurants, but otherwise to be kept in their place . Most of us are still huddled tight to the border, looking into the candy store window, scared by the Americans on one side and the bush on the other."(P.'s398-399) This says, in no uncertain terms, that Canada is compromised of people not worthy of other countries. The satirical nature of this statement is alluded to by harsh words, such as "holding tank" and "scared". Also by impersonal words, such as "progeny". Most Canadians do not, as this says, envy the Americans and think of America as a "candy store". Richler is attacking some typical stereotypes of Canada and Canadians by exemplifying them. Moses, who is Richler's voice in the novel, exhibits many autobiographical characteristics: English speaking resident of Montreal, raised on Jean Mance street. He has a strong religious backround (Jewish), smokes a cigars, writes professionally and lived in London, England for a period. Moses and his father L.B. do not get along well. L.B., a failed poet, is resentful of his son's literary talent. This leads to leads to L.B. treating his son with contempt. On one occasion, Moses, home from school at Balliol, tells LB that he submitted a short story, which LB said "showed promise"(p.129), to "the New Yorker. L.B. belittled Moses for his attempt which he suspected to fail and demanded that he be given the mail upon it's arrival, to open it in private. When the package from "the New Yorker" arrived, L.B. opened and read it in private, then later invited Moses into the room. L.B. proceeded to tell Moses that he also had been rejected by "editors who print crap, so long as it is written by their friends, but who couldn't tell Pushkin from Ogden Nash."(P. 132). Moses later learned that the magazine had accepted his story and had sent it back requesting a few small revisions. He, supposedly, ha d written back saying "'the New Yorker' regularly prints crap so long as it is written by their friends, they couldn't tell Pushkin from Ogden Nash, and he was withdrawing his story." (P. 309). This filial relationship is typical of all others in this novel. All are full of anomosity and dislike. Many times they escalate of cruelty as seen in this instance. Solomon Gursky led a prolific life consisting of gambling, traveling, bootlegging, military service(WWI) and many women. Through his teenage gambling exploits, the first in a chain of hotels, which would lay the foundation for the Gursky empire, was acquired in a

Which salt should be used to make an effective but economical cold pac
Which salt should be used to make an effective but economical cold pac Mrs. Raihan Honors Chemistry 25 March 2015 Which salt should be used to make an effective but economical cold pack? In accordance to the question above, a claim was developed after a series of experiments and observations, Ammonium Chloride, NH4Cl, is the most effectual but also economical ingredient to make a cold pack because it met the requirements of being an inexpensive salt and lowering the mixtures temperature by 2c. The claim was proved correctly based off of the quantitative and qualitative data that was taken down during the experiment. To find out whether the salt in the cold back is a good substance or not, the change in enthalpy change, which occurs with the process of dissolution, is also known as the heat of solution. At a constant pressure, the heat of solution is equivalent to the heat lost from the surrounding. For this to happen, the energy is absorbed to break the intermolecular bonds of both the water and the solute, energy is gained in this process. Then, energy is released as attractive forces start to form between the broken ions and water molecules, from here, energy is re leased. The heat of solution can therefore be an exothermic or endothermic depending on which one is stronger. In this case, the energy absorbed is stronger than the one being released which means it turns cold, an endothermic. So, one can discover if a cold pack is effective by finding the heat of solution then compare to the other salts tested to find out both economically cheap and most effective salt. Before the investigation commenced, steps were created in order to make sure that everything was going to work out. Using the previously known information, from previous labs made, it was inducted that the following steps would be done to perfect the experiment. First of all the safety equipment was gathered, the materials needed would be gathered and cleaned thoroughly to reduce any human error. The salts that were tested were Ammonium Chloride, Ammonium Nitrate, Magnesium Sulfate and Ammonium Thiocyanate. Then, a calorimeter would be made, two styrofoam cups within one another, a sheet of aluminum between them, a thermometer on top which was struck through the aluminum top to keep the temperature as isolated as possible to have the most accurate information. Then, taking a plastic cup, 30ml of water was measured out then placed into the calorimeter because then 2.5 grams of a salt was measured out. The initial temperature of the water was taken before the ingredients were mixed, i mmediately after, the temperature was taken down every five seconds for two minutes. The information was recorded in a graph and then averages of the time were taken down so there could be an even information for all salts so there would be no mistake made. The steps above were then repeated twice for each salt, all information recorded into a graph as well. The experiment was conducted in this way to include all of the possible experiments previously done to prove that it was successful, which in the end, based off of the claim, it was correct. Based off of the guiding question, Ammonium Chloride is the best salt needed to meet both the requirements of being an economically cheap salt and also effective. Ammonium Chloride fell from 21.25c to 18.65c, it dropped more than 2c. The second part of the question asks to choose the cheapest salt, that is still effective which is NH4Cl at $0.0139 per gram. Thus, the salt that meets the guiding questions needs is Ammonium Chloride because it met the 2c temperature drop along with an economically cheap price. Using the graphs and tables provided, it is easier to identify the change in temperature for each salt. When one observes NH4Cl, it is easy to comprehend that it is the most efficient one since it has around the same information like the more better, but also expensive ones. Finally, after the information was gathered, the magnitude of heat energy change was found by using the following equation: Q=mcT which was then transferred to the heat that the salt let out before dividing i t by the number of moles in the solute. The heat of solution was
