Fun Times @ MIT (Pt. 1) MIT has this uncanny way of making you learn life lessons extremely quickly. Case in point: in the past two and a half years, Ive learned the following: (1) Work never ends no matter what, theres always something productive you could be doing. (2) Failure is all too common you cant be perfect 100% of the time. (3) Its easy to feel sad and miserable about work, psets, and consistently staying up till 4 am or 5 am. (4) Its possible to be inundated with work yet happy at the same time. (5) Its my choice to pick (4) over (3). And thats why this semesters going to be different. In terms of classes, this upcoming semester is going to be my most challenging semester yet. As a double major in Course 6-7 and 9, Im taking the following: 6.005 Elements of Software Construction This class is notoriously tedious and time-consuming. It relies on Java, which I havent actually come in contact with since my senior year of high school. Im sure this list will get longer and longer as the semester goes on, and I dont expect to finish everything on it. Still, it makes me look past the psets/tests to come and look forward to the outings and hangouts. Mordecai Richler`s Solomon Gursky Was Here Solomon Gursky Was Here is an epic novel spanning nearly a century and a half, from the mid 1800's to 1980's. It is the story of the obsession of Moses Berger, a Rhodes scholar turned alcoholic, with Solomon Gursky, the charismatic son of a poor immigrant. Solomon, with his brother Bernard and Morrie, built the massive liquor empire of McTavish industries. Moses is attempting to write a biography of Solomon, which becomes his life's work. Through his investigations the complex story of five generations of Gurskys is revealed. The eldest is Ephraim, Solomon'scriminal, perpetually scheming grandfather. Ephraim, is constantly associated with the raven, he escaped imprisonment in England in the mid 1800's by forging documents, also allowing him to join a crew searching for the Northwest passage, called the Franklin Epedition. The expedition turned into a total disaster, Ephraim, the sole survivor. The youngest Gursky appearing in this story is Isaac, Solomon's grandson. This complex tale unravels, as Moses recalls, all of the events in his life which pertain to it. Ever present in this Canadian cultural satire is the theme of filial relationships and the exploration of Solomon and his re-incarnation as Sir Hyman Kaplansky, in conjunction with his family and their exploits. Every character in this novel is in some way corrupt or failure. Moses is an alcoholic who did not live up to his potential; Bernard is a greedy self-centered bastard; Solomon is a cheat, when it comes to gambling, women and anything else you can think of. Richler, through this exaggeration of corruption and failure, is satirizing the idea that Canada is a second rate nation. One character, in conversation with Moses, once said: "Canada is not so much a country as a holding tank filled with the disgruntled progeny of defeated peoples. The French-Canadians consumed by self-pity; the descendants of Scots who fled the Duke of Chamberlain; Irish the famine; and Jews the black hundreds. Then there are the peasants from the Ukraine, Poland , Italy and Greece, convenient to grow wheat and dig out ore and swing the hammers and run the restaurants, but otherwise to be kept in their place . Most of us are still huddled tight to the border, looking into the candy store window, scared by the Americans on one side and the bush on the other."(P.'s398-399) This says, in no uncertain terms, that Canada is compromised of people not worthy of other countries. The satirical nature of this statement is alluded to by harsh words, such as "holding tank" and "scared". Also by impersonal words, such as "progeny". Most Canadians do not, as this says, envy the Americans and think of America as a "candy store". Richler is attacking some typical stereotypes of Canada and Canadians by exemplifying them. Moses, who is Richler's voice in the novel, exhibits many autobiographical characteristics: English speaking resident of Montreal, raised on Jean Mance street. He has a strong religious backround (Jewish), smokes a cigars, writes professionally and lived in London, England for a period. Moses and his father L.B. do not get along well. In accordance to the question above, a claim was developed after a series of experiments and observations, Ammonium Chloride, NH4Cl, is the most effectual but also economical ingredient to make a cold pack because it met the requirements of being an inexpensive salt and lowering the mixtures temperature by 2c. The claim was proved correctly based off of the quantitative and qualitative data that was taken down during the experiment. To find out whether the salt in the cold back is a good substance or not, the change in enthalpy change, which occurs with the process of dissolution, is also known as the heat of solution. At a constant pressure, the heat of solution is equivalent to the heat lost from the surrounding. For this to happen, the energy is absorbed to break the intermolecular bonds of both the water and the solute, energy is gained in this process. Then, energy is released as attractive forces start to form between the broken ions and water molecules, from here, energy is re leased. The heat of solution can therefore be an exothermic or endothermic depending on which one is stronger. In this case, the energy absorbed is stronger than the one being released which means it turns cold, an endothermic. So, one can discover if a cold pack is effective by finding the heat of solution then compare to the other salts tested to find out both economically cheap and most effective salt. Before the investigation commenced, steps were created in order to make sure that everything was going to work out. Using the previously known information, from previous labs made, it was inducted that the following steps would be done to perfect the experiment. First of all the safety equipment was gathered, the materials needed would be gathered and cleaned thoroughly to reduce any human error. The salts that were tested were Ammonium Chloride, Ammonium Nitrate, Magnesium Sulfate and Ammonium Thiocyanate. Then, a calorimeter would be made, two styrofoam cups within one another, a sheet of aluminum between them, a thermometer on top which was struck through the aluminum top to keep the temperature as isolated as possible to have the most accurate information. Then, taking a plastic cup, 30ml of water was measured out then placed into the calorimeter because then 2.5 grams of a salt was measured out. The initial temperature of the water was taken before the ingredients were mixed, i mmediately after, the temperature was taken down every five seconds for two minutes. The information was recorded in a graph and then averages of the time were taken down so there could be an even information for all salts so there would be no mistake made. The steps above were then repeated twice for each salt, all information recorded into a graph as well. The experiment was conducted in this way to include all of the possible experiments previously done to prove that it was successful, which in the end, based off of the claim, it was correct. Based off of the guiding question, Ammonium Chloride is the best salt needed to meet both the requirements of being an economically cheap salt and also effective. Ammonium Chloride fell from 21.25c to 18.65c, it dropped more than 2c. The second part of the question asks to choose the cheapest salt, that is still effective which is NH4Cl at $0.0139 per gram. DIY X-Y Plotter Design Objective: The design report includes the details about the process involved in building a DIY XY-plotter and programming the device to draw a square or a circle with precise dimensions and scale. The components and the design is made feasible to the budget available i.e.,  £100 GBP. The device is designed and built with accuracy to meet the given task by performing and validating the test required. In the final step of this project, the precision rate and accuracy is taken care to get the necessary output. Introduction: A XY plotter is a two dimensional printing or writing machine with continuous lines in x and y axes. The pen held by the pen control moves in all possible directions such as forward and backwards, as well as sideways and diagonally over a flat surface. Each axis of the plotter is controlled by separate single stepper motor and railings, the pen is controlled by servo. The electricals are controlled and achieved by the controller which is lpc1768 and 12v power supply. In this project, the machine has been designed to draw a square or a circle on a A5 drawing bed given, depending on the configuration selected. This project should meet specific requirements. Some of the constraints to take into account are the material provided, which is acrylic, the controller to be used, which is the mbed lpc1768, and a felt tip pen and the sensor, which is solenoid. Not to mention, the overall budget should limit an amount of  £100GBP. XY movement mechanism: The plotter has two axes control and involves movement of the pen in x and y axis. Each axis of the plotter is controlled by single stepper motor, which is NEMA stepper motor 17. The design involves the A5 bed with the dimension 300mm in length and 180mm in width which moves in the direction forward and backwards using single stepper motor on edge of the sliding bed. The pen is controlled by servo and the conveyer holding the pen is moved in the direction left and right using the stepper motor placed attached to the gears at the back end of the plotter. The design is expected to be plotted on the A5 sheet of dimension 250mm in length and 150mm in width. The pen can also be controlled by solenoid for continuous movement of the pen on the A5 bed, due to the feasibility and availability servo is replaced by solenoid in the project. The use of the window to frame little Kane places the emphasis on him and shows how the signing of the documents will have a crucial impact on Kane. The framing also creates contrast between the joyful mood of kane playin g outside with the serious discussions in the house. The men are in a dark room, silouette of the man talking in front is seen. This shot uses only back lighting as the sole source of lighting to create a mysterious and secretive mood.The dark room signifys that the men have many questions on their mind about Charles Foster Kane and his last words, hence being â€Å"left in the dark†. The set-up also establishes the stage for the rest of the story. None of the men are actually in the focus in this shot, it shows that neither of them are of adequate significance in the story. The way the room is lid also expresses the filmmaker's views about members of the media. The strong light and shadow contrast shows the characters' somewhat shady intentions for uncovering the last words of kane.

Republican Gerald R. Ford became the 38th President of the United States (1974-1977) during a period of turmoil in the White House and mistrust in government. Ford was serving as the Vice President of the U.S. when President Richard M. Nixon resigned from office, placing Ford in the unique position of being the first Vice President and President never elected. Despite his unprecedented path to the White House, Gerald Ford restored Americans’ faith in its government through his steady Midwestern values of honesty, hard work, and genuineness. However, Ford’s controversial pardon of Nixon helped sway the American public to not elect Ford to a second term. Dates: July 14, 1913 – December 26, 2006 Also Known As: Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr.; Jerry Ford; Leslie Lynch King, Jr. (born as) An Unusual Start Gerald R. Ford was born Leslie Lynch King, Jr., in Omaha, Nebraska, on July 14, 1913, to parents Dorothy Gardner King and Leslie Lynch King. Two weeks later, Dorothy moved with her infant son to live with her parents in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after her husband, who was reportedly abusive in their short marriage, threatened her and her newborn son. They were soon divorced. It was in Grand Rapids that Dorothy met Gerald Rudolf Ford, a good-natured, successful salesman and owner of a paint business. Dorothy and Gerald were married in February 1916, and the couple began calling little Leslie by a new name -- Gerald R. Ford, Jr. or â€Å"Jerry† for short. These talents, as well as his academics,  earned Ford a scholarship to the University of Michigan. While there, he played for the Wolverines football team as a  back-up center until securing the starting spot in 1934, the year he received the Most Valuable Player award. His skills on the field captured offers from both the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, but Ford declined both as he had plans to attend law school. With his sights on Yale University Law School, Ford, after graduating from the University of Michigan in 1935, accepted a position as boxing coach and assistant football coach at Yale. Three years later, he gained admittance to the law school where he soon graduated in the top third of his class. In January 1941, Ford returned to Grand Rapids and started a law firm with a college friend, Phil Buchen (who later served on President Ford’s White House staff). Love, War, and Politics Before Gerald Ford had spent a full year at his law practice, the United States entered World War II and Ford enlisted with the U.S. Navy. In April 1942, he entered basic training as an ensign  but was soon promoted to lieutenant. Requesting combat duty, Ford was assigned a year later to the aircraft carrier USS Monterey as the athletic director and gunnery officer. During his military service, he would eventually rise to an  assistant navigator and lieutenant commander. Ford saw many battles in the South Pacific and survived the devastating typhoon of 1944. Betty Ford, a fashion coordinator for a major Grand Rapids department store and a dance teacher, would become an outspoken, independent-thinking First Lady, who successfully battled addictions to support her husband through 58 years of marriage. Their union produced three sons, Michael, John, and Steven, and a daughter, Susan. Ford as a Congressman Gerald Ford would be re-elected 12 times by his home district to the U.S. Congress with at least 60% of the vote in each election. He was known across the aisle as a hardworking, likable, and honest Congressman. Early on, Ford received an assignment to the House Appropriations Committee, which is charged with overseeing governmental expenditures, including, at the time, military spending for the Korean War. In 1961, he was elected Chairman of the House of Republican Conference, an influential position within the party. When President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, Ford was appointed by newly sworn-in President Lyndon B. Johnson to the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination. In 1965, Ford was voted by his fellow Republicans to the position of House Minority Leader, a role he held for eight years. As Minority Leader, he worked with the Democratic Party in ​the  majority to forge compromises, as well as advance his Republican Party’s agenda within the House of Representatives. However, Ford’s ultimate goal was to become Speaker of the House, but fate would intervene otherwise. Many people were out of work, gas and oil supplies were limited, and prices were high on necessities like food, clothing, and housing. He also inherited the ending backlash of the Vietnam War. Despite all of these challenges, Ford’s approval rate was high because he was viewed as a refreshing alternative to the recent administration. He reinforced this image by instituting a number of small changes, like commuting for several days into his presidency from his suburban split level while transitions were being completed at the White House. Also, he had the University of Michigan Fight Song played instead of Hail to the Chief when appropriate; he promised open-door policies with key congressional officials and he chose to call the White House â€Å"residence† rather than a mansion. This favorable opinion of President Ford would not last long. A month later, on September 8, 1974, Ford granted former President Richard Nixon a full pardon for all crimes that Nixon had â€Å"committed or may have committed or taken part in† during his time as president. Nearly immediately, Ford’s approval rate plummeted more than 20 percentage points. The pardon outraged many Americans, but Ford stood resolutely behind his decision because he thought he was simply doing the right thing. Ford wanted to move past the controversy of one man and proceed with governing the country. It was also important to Ford to restore credibility to the presidency and he believed that it would be difficult to do so if the country stayed mired in the Watergate Scandal. Years later, Ford’s act would be considered wise and selfless by historians, but at the time it faced significant opposition and was considered political suicide. Ford’s Presidency In 1974, Gerald Ford became the first U.S. President to visit Japan. He also made goodwill trips to China and other European countries. Ford declared the official end of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War when he refused to send American military back into Vietnam after the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese in 1975. As the final step in the war, Ford ordered the evacuation of remaining U.S. citizens, ending America’s extended presence in Vietnam. Three months later, in July 1975, Gerald Ford attended the Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Helsinki, Finland. He joined 35 nations in addressing human rights and diffusing Cold War tensions. Though he had opponents at home, Ford signed the Helsinki Accords, a non-binding diplomatic agreement to improve relations between the Communist states and the West. In 1976, President Ford hosted a number of foreign leaders for America’s bicentennial celebration. A Hunted Man In September 1975, within three weeks of each other, two separate women made assassination attempts on Gerald Ford’s life. On September 5, 1975, Lynette â€Å"Squeaky† Fromme aimed a semi-automatic pistol at the President as he walked a few feet away from her at Capitol Park in Sacramento, California. Secret Service agents foiled the attempt when they wrestled Fromme, a member of Charles Manson’s â€Å"Family,† to the ground before she had a chance to fire. Seventeen days later, on September 22, in San Francisco, President Ford was fired upon by Sara Jane Moore, an accountant. A bystander likely saved the President as he spotted Moore with the gun and grabbed for it as she fired, causing the bullet to miss its target. Both Fromme and Moore were given sentences of life in prison for their presidential assassination attempts. Losing an Election During the Bicentennial Celebration, Ford was also in a battle with his party for the nomination as the Republican candidate for the November presidential election. In a rare occurrence, Ronald Reagan decided to challenge a sitting president for the nomination. In the end, Ford narrowly won the nomination to run against the Democratic governor from Georgia, Jimmy Carter. Ford, who had been seen as an â€Å"accidental† president, made a huge misstep during a debate with Carter by declaring that there was no Soviet domination in Eastern Europe. Ford was unable to back-step, eroding his efforts to appear presidential. This only furthered public opinion that he was clumsy and an awkward orator. Even so, it was one of the closest presidential races in history. In the end, however, Ford could not overcome his connection to the Nixon administration and his Washington-insider status. America was ready for a change and elected Jimmy Carter, a newcomer to D.C., to the presidency. Later Years During Gerald R. Ford’s presidency, more than four million Americans returned to work, inflation decreased, and foreign affairs were advanced. But it is Ford’s decency, honesty, openness, and integrity that are a hallmark of his unconventional presidency. So much so that Carter, although a Democrat, consulted Ford on foreign affair issues throughout his tenure. Ford and Carter would remain life-long friends. A few years later, in 1980, Ronald Reagan asked Gerald Ford to be his running mate in the presidential election, but Ford declined the offer to potentially return to Washington as he and Betty were enjoying their retirement. However, Ford remained active in the political process and was a frequent lecturer on the topic. Ford also lent his expertise to the corporate world by participating on a number of boards. He established the American Enterprise Institute World Forum in 1982, which brought former and current world leaders, as well as business leaders, together each year to discuss policies impacting political and business issues. He hosted the event for many years in Colorado. Ford also completed his memoirs, A Time to Heal: The Autobiography of Gerald R. Ford, in 1979. He published a second book, Humor and the Presidency, in 1987. Honors and Awards The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library opened in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on the campus of the University of Michigan in 1981. Later the same year, the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum was dedicated 130 miles away, in his hometown of Grand Rapids. Ford was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in August 1999 and two months later, the Congressional Gold Medal for the legacy of his public service and leadership to the country after Watergate. In 2001, he was awarded the Profiles of Courage Award by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and honor that is bestowed upon individuals who act according to their own conscience in pursuit of the greater good, even in opposition to popular opinion and at great risk to their careers. On December 26, 2006, Gerald R. Ford died at his home in Rancho Mirage, California, at 93 years old. His body is interred on the grounds of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Even though evidence of high prevalence is found, many of these needs are unmet due to lack of appropriate screening and identification and poor continuity of care (Harrington and Bailey, 2005). This is particularly apparent amongst young people in custody. Eighty semi-structured interviews will be carry out with key stakeholders to ascertain the structures of current service provision, and processes involved in provision and outcome. This includes interviews with youth offending staffs, managers and staff within secure establishments, and providers of mental health services in the young offenders’ institutes. Between 20-40 percent of young offenders will also be question about their satisfaction with a variety of different services. All sampled children in YOI at the time of the surveys will be invited to engage from to complete a questionnaire. Every effort shall be made to speak to each participant individually in order to explain the purpose and confidentiality of the survey and the independence of the process. My initial thought was that it would be less tedious in comparison to writing an essay. However, participating in lectures and engaging in class activities gave me the stamina and enthusiasm to engage in the process. Having not engage in such a process before was definitely going to be a challenge. I started by going through the lecture notes and the weekly lecture slides to be able to understand how to develop a research question. A research question helps you to focus on your research by providing a path to navigate the research and writing process (Punch, 2006). Although I had partake in the same lecture on how to develop a research question, yet my understanding was a little vague. I searched using the Google website using what I already had in mind and I came across an article from the Independent Newspaper talking about the mental health of young offenders. I then engage with the literature search strategy to develop my question. Building on the research question helped me to develop the introduction which in itself was also not explicit. Again I turn to the lecture notes to guide me on that. One of the most difficult task in the process was developing the rationale. I struggle to understand the fundamentals on how to cultivate an effective rationale due to not fully understanding the important historical and contextual events which is vital in research and which informs the reader about why and how the research problem I’m interested in exist.
